How to Find Her Ring Size Without Giving the Game Away

Planning a surprise proposal is exciting, until you realise you have no idea what size her ring finger is. The good news: there are several discreet ways to find out, and a small mistake is easy to fix.
1. Borrow a ring she already wears
The most reliable option is a ring she already wears on her ring finger. Borrow it for an afternoon (choose one she will not miss) and bring it in. We can size it accurately in the boutique. If you cannot take it out of the house, trace the inside of the band carefully on paper, or press it into a bar of soap to make an impression.
Try to choose a ring from the correct hand. Fingers on the dominant hand are often slightly larger, so a ring she wears on her right hand may not fit her left.
2. Ask someone you trust
A best friend, sister or mother may already know her size, or can find out without raising suspicion. Just make sure they can keep a secret.
3. Look for clues
Has she been sized before, perhaps for a family ring or a dress ring? Has she ever mentioned her size? In Australia, ring sizes are given as letters (the same system used in the UK), so listen out for a letter rather than a number.
4. Think about timing
Fingers can change size slightly through the day and with the weather, usually a little larger in warmth and at the end of the day. A ring should slide over the knuckle with gentle resistance and sit comfortably without spinning.
If you are unsure
When in doubt, it is generally easier to make a ring smaller than larger, so a guess on the generous side is safer. Some designs, such as rings set with diamonds all the way around the band, are much harder to resize, so it is worth mentioning when you choose your ring.
